The traditional printing method used to print
graphics on beer cans is known as "offset printing" or "offset lithography." Offset printing is a widely used
commercial printing technique that involves transferring an inked image from a printing plate to a rubber
blanket and then onto the surface of the beer can.
Here's a simplified overview of the offset printing process for beer cans:
- Prepress: Graphic designers create the artwork and layout for the beer can label. This design is then
transferred to a printing plate.
- Plate Making: Printing plates are produced for each color used in the design. For full-color labels, four
plates are typically used (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, known as CMYK).
- Printing: The beer cans are fed through an offset printing press. Each printing plate applies its
respective color of ink to the cans. The inked image is first transferred to a rubber blanket and then
to the surface of the can.
- Drying: After printing, the ink must dry before the cans can be further processed. This is often
accomplished using a combination of heat and air drying systems.
- Coating and Finishing: Depending on the desired finish, additional coatings may be applied to protect the
printed graphics or provide a specific texture or sheen. This step also includes varnishing, laminating,
or other finishing techniques.
- Inspection and Packaging: After the ink is dry and the finishing is complete, the beer cans are inspected
for quality and consistency. They are then packaged for distribution.
Offset printing is known for its high-quality results and the ability to reproduce vibrant and detailed graphics,
making it a popular choice for beverage packaging, including beer cans. However, newer digital printing
technologies are also being used in the industry, offering greater flexibility and the potential for shorter
print runs and customized designs.
This new press is a more modern and cost-effective
printing methods for breweries that can't afford the high volumes typically required for traditional offset
printing on beer cans. These methods are particularly suitable for smaller breweries and limited-edition or
craft beer runs. Two common modern printing methods for beer cans in such scenarios are:
- Digital Printing: Digital printing technology has advanced significantly and is
well-suited for smaller print runs. Here's how it works:
- Inkjet Technology: Digital beer can printers use inkjet technology to directly
apply ink onto the can's surface. This eliminates the need for printing plates used in offset
printing.
- Quick Turnaround: Digital printing offers shorter setup times and quicker
turnaround compared to traditional methods.
Digital printing is ideal for breweries looking to produce small batches with customized or
limited-edition designs.
These modern printing methods offer greater flexibility and cost-efficiency for breweries that can't commit to
the high minimum order quantities associated with traditional printing on cans. They are particularly
well-suited for small-batch production, seasonal releases, or experimental brews. Additionally, they allow
breweries to experiment with different label designs and adapt quickly to changing market demands.
